Colorado Elk Hunts

We specialize in Colorado elk hunts in the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests.

Colorado Elk Hunts - HMH Outfitters

Colorado is an elk hunters dream.  It is a rugged, mountainous state and is the only state in the US that is completely above 3200 feet elevation.  The eastern side of Colorado has high plains and is rich in farms and ranches.  The western side of Colorado is covered with the south part of the Rocky Mountains.  Colorado is one of the most mountainous states in the United States which makes for incredible elk hunting.  There are more than 50 peaks that are over 14,000 feet or higher above sea level.  Those peaks are covered in forests that provide a sanctuary for elk, deer, and other wildlife.  Colorado produces more elk and any other state!

High Mountain Hunts provides fully guided hunts and will be a two to one ratio or one to one ratio. We have guides who have hunted this area for years and their knowledge is top notch. They spend all year in the woods learning the migration and habits of the animals in our units.  Guiding and hunting is their passion.

The Colorado San Juan National Forest and the Rio Grande National Forest are home to excellent elk hunting. We exclusively hunt GMUs 76, 77, 78, and 771.

The hunting area consists of varying elevation from 5,500ft above sea level to 14,000ft above sea level. While the terrain of the area will vary, you may expect to encounter rough, steep and rocky, open, and wooded mountain terrain.

The weather is consistent with that of high altitude, mountainous terrain with temperatures ranging from 20F to 80F. The weather can vary greatly and is highly unpredictable, especially in the mountains. Sufficient hiking boots, rain, and cold weather gear are a necessity for each guest.

The vigorous nature of the hunt and variability of the weather means every hunter must be in good physical condition with at least average agility and strength and above average endurance.

All rifle seasons provide a chance to harvest an animal that would  make you proud.  Each of the four rifle seasons have their own advantages over the other seasons. Usually, during the first season, elk are still bugling and can be called in. Second and third rifle have potential to be very productive too especially when the weather turns colder, and the snow comes in.  This moves animals from higher elevations to lower which helps concentrate them versus being scattered through the woods. With the cold and snow and the end of rut, the animals will focus more time on looking for food which can increase opportunities for kill.  With the migration in full swing, fourth season provides an opportunity to see large herds of animals moving towards their winter grounds which gives excellent shot opportunities. All four seasons are a five-day hunt. First and fourth rifle for elk is a draw only season so you must apply to get a bull license. Second and third rifle are over the counter bull licenses.
